  • You are NOT a Green Woodpecker!

We see both Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers regularly in the garden: Green on the ground after ants (plentiful as usual) and Great Spots on the one peanut feeder we leave up all year round. You never see a Green on the nuts or a Great Spot after ants! Both species breed locally and so far as I remember have been successful every year since we've been here, and both also seem to spend a few days after fledging with 1 or more youngsters following each adult separately (which I guess is part of the learning process towards becoming independent).

So it was a bit of a surprise to look out of the window a few minutes ago to see this recently fledged young Great Spot clearly out picking up ants on our (rather overgrown/weedy) patio! He was there for several minutes before heading off towards the peanut feeder where I'd seen him & his dad earlier in the week. Not a great shot as I was in the middle of an important phone call at the time so this was through dirty double glazing, single handed with the 300mm PRO + 1.4TC on the OM-1 (and even given how light M4/3 kit is this isn't really suited to one-handed shooting!).

    "our (rather overgrown/weedy) patio"

Your candour does you credit Chris, but had you said nothing, we'd all have assumed the patio was part of your rewilding project and admired your commitment 😉.

Woodpeckers dine at our insect "hotel".

        Lovely shots.

I'm amazed at the number of images of birds shot through dirty double glazed windows. 😂🤣
