Fish is out, Eagle is coming!

Hi all,

The past summer I went to Norway on a three-day organized tour to photograph White-tailed Eagles from a boat. There were some travel issues as SAS pilots went on strike, and to make it back home I had to fall back to hitch-hiking to and crowded trains and regional buses. But it was worth the effort. Although it rained quite a lot and half of the boat trips were canceled, a joint decision was made with the captain as the Eagles simply won't take off in miserable weather conditions (they avoid getting their wings soaked) it was a truly great experience, I would say the best photo trip I have been on so far. The area holds a very healthy population with some 30-40 nesting pairs. In early July they are fully busy feeding the chicks and you will get many opportunities to capture these magnificent birds at a close distance.

Here are a few samples, it was hard to make a selection... All with the OM-1 and 40-150 F/2.8.

I shall return, and the next time I will probably drive in order to combine that trip with other locations.

The things we do for photography! Lovely captures. I am amazed how well the 40- 150 performs. Are theses cropped or did you manage to get close?

These are slightly cropped down to 4000-5000 on the long side, for composition reasons. And yes, the 40-150 is a nice lens. I used it when photographing Dalmatian Pelicans as well as fishing Ospreys, you can look for my posts with photos.

Really lucky to get to see them close up, I had two trips on Mull cancelled, (I’m not going back - 2 holidays there and just rained 😄 might as well stay in the West Country 🤣.
whilst the strikes were inconvenient, think it could have been great fun.. i haven’t hitched in 20 years but have picked them up, it’s always interesting who you meet,

Wonderful pics. I can hear Ole's voice in my head now! I used Canon when I visited. What did you do for AF? All points, CAF bird AI? Tracking or not?

Ole is a nice chap indeed. I used an AF zone covering approximately 75% of the sensor, C-AF (non-TR) + bird AI, Auto-ISO, and shutter speed limit of 1/1250s... 1/1600s
