  • Australasian Darter Fishing

Today (25/9/22) I saw a female Australasian Darter fishing in the Swan river.

Captured a fish (I think a Perth Herring) - speared on that sharp beak

Not as spectacular as Osprey catching fish, but the end result is the same - dinner!

Thanks Les, all down to the benefits of the OM-1, pro-capture, DXO deep-prime and a bird conveniently popping up.

Great photos. It's interesting how some birds spear fish whilst others just catch and swallow, perhaps after bashing them on something.

I had assumed it would have been a biting action with some kind of serration in the beak for grip, so I learned something taking these. This and another darter I saw submerging today slightly open their beaks when they submerge, presumably to prepare them for spearing like a 2 pronged fork.
