  • Comet C/2023 A3 this evening

    At its closest point to earth and visible in the western sky around 45 minutes after UK sunset at roughly the same elevation as Venus.

    Extract from today's Guardian.

      I had a look last night, but clouds were positioned exactly in front of where it would be. The rest of the sky was clear!

        Anyone else here had a go?

        It's actually sunny this evening though the forecast was for cloud. I'm going out shortly to the spot I scouted the other day which has a good long distance horizon view.

        Fingers crossed...

              Big black cloud materialised in the wrong spot last night, and 8/8 oktas tonight. There's always tomorrow....

              Note : it seems the best pics were captured around 7.30pm UK time yesterday

                I got it! Several shots of varying quality - the big issue for me was that it wasn't visible with the naked eye - I whacked the exposure right up and there it was, and it had been there all the time. I stupidly didn't bring a tripod, so had to jerry rig the camera on some cloth bas that were in the car and use the self timer to ensure the came was settled.

                I'll post shots in a new thread shortly.
