  • Geminids meteors season soon

Another annual meteor season (around 14th December) is coming up, but the brightness of the moon may restrict optimal visibility:

The cosmos’ annual gift to sky watchers, the Geminids Meteor shower, will peak on Dec. 13-14 this year. During peak activity and perfect weather conditions, which are rare, the Geminids produce approximately 100-150 meteors per hour for viewing. However, this year a waning gibbous moon will make it harder to view most of the shower, …

I spotted some really bright long streaks last night but did not manage to get any on camera. May head further out of town tonight to my usual dark sky spot if the skies stay clear.

Just got reminded about the Geminids by a mate so went out to have a quick look. Didn't see anything but just shot this hand held with my phone! Still can't quite believe what it captured. I didn't do anything just held it up towards Orion and hit the shoot spot. It did a 3s exposure so I thought don't be silly that will be a mess. Well not only did it get a passable shot of Orion despite the light pollution I think it got a meteor too on the lhs. What do you guys think?

Think your right. Great shot of Orion too.

Thanks Dave. To be honest I was just astonished that a hand held phone shot could come out so well with fairly sharp stars. The meteor was just pure fluke as I was only out in the cold for about 5 minutes and only took seven 3 second shots.
