  • Scurge of Anglers

Through a little research I have discovered crayfish are quite a nuisance to to those who fish.

I'm sure they will welcome a couple of pix of a heron devouring two ahead of its evening meal.

These were taken along the Grand Union Canal close to where we live.
You can't get them fresher than that.

They can do damage on some fishing waters but if captured in clean water are nice with garlic butter! (the Crayfish, never tried Heron!) Nice shots.

Nice capture, I've never seen a heron take a cray and I spend a lot of time at the waterside.

It's the American signal crays that are the problem - an aggressive non-native species that, as well as being a pest to anglers, is a real threat to the indigenous population of white clawed crays.

But, yes, they are nice with garlic butter, or a sweet chilli dip.....

I always get a 'green' feeling when I eat crayfish, knowing it's helping to reduce a pest. Grey squirrels are also good eating - a bit like rabbit but not so big.

These birds are quite tame which live close to us. Our photography of late has been mainly heron and Anne and I have built up quite a collection. The herons are now quite used to us and we can get pretty close - however not that close because we repect them (to a point) but I think they could get pretty vicious. We are heroned out and the only items on our present list (in between moving) are kingfisher and fox.

Many thanks for all the kind comments.
