  • Canal birdlife in April

Last week we welcomed a family of geese - seven goslings in total although, alas, we now seem to have only four. As they have been running around a field in the town centre it is not surprising!

    1. Let's hope this swan has more success with her cygnets when the time comes. Her nest is exclusive - on a small island in a pond fed by a stream running parallel to the canal.

    2. Our resident heron spent several hours flying up and down the canal but needless to say not when we were in the best position for a shot. Resting before take-off ...

    3. Airborne - just!

    4. This duck followed me along the canal for quite some time - I guess she was hoping for some food - the duck population has been somewhat spoilt during the school holidays with many youngsters throwing handfuls of bread!

    5. Oh well, if there's no food, then at least I might as well get a drink!

Today I decided to leave the E30 at home and all the above were taken with the EP-1, 14-42mm lens. I find this a very comfortable camera to accompany me on longer walks.

    Regards, Ann1e

    Nice set Ann1e!

I spotted a Mallard mum with no less than 11 ducklings this afternoon - could they have all been hers?!

They could well have been, Ian!

I can see we are going to have some sort of inter town rivalry with these babes - we have 7 goslings, your have trumped us with 11 ducklings - somehow I don't think we're going to outdo you with the cygnets but maybe the moorhens or coots will oblige!

Ann1e - you are doing well with the heron - I've been playing tag with my 'local' one for weeks, to no good result.

But there is great satisfaction in mastering a local walk, and always something new if you look.
