  • Slightly Encouraged

with the performance of the E-3, Sigma 150, EC2.0 combination - though it is challenging beast to use 'in the field'.

Anyway one of our smaller hoverflies in an uncropped shot

    Should I persevere?

Never mind the sarcasm Nick, keep on going. I and 'er indoors love your shots. The others are just jealous (as I am).

I'm afraid Keith was right - they are dust marks

A quick sky test suggests they start to show at something around F18, and given they show as darker marks they must be fairly well down the optical chain. But even if they on the sensor, well sswf doesn't promise to remove everything and F18 is really only of interest to a few odd souls like me.

Thanks for confirming the origin of the spots.....AND interest to me as well...as I get up into the high numbers on my insect shots as well.....I had better polish up some skills on the clone tool.

                Nick -

You should be more than slightly encouraged - the detail on that fly is superb!

Thank you Ann1e. Though I had a much higher discard rate than I normally like. The combination does obviously work.

                      Re: Slightly Encouraged

Nice color and sharpness. I enjoy closeups, but I'm waiting for the ghost of olympus 100 macro to buy one. I thought that people complained about the EC2.0 causing to much softness in their image, but yours look great. Was this one shot of many, or is your keeper rate better?

I don't think the ec2.0 causes softness, I've posted several shots with the ec2.0 90-250 and it seems to perform well.

I do suspect that the ec2.0 pushes a lenses design parameter quite hard. So compromises may tend to show, particularly if exposure is not close to optimal.

With the 150 (which is 300mm with the ec2.0, 600 in 'old money') it is the handling (hand held) of that much magnification combinded with the very shallow dof. I wouldn't put my rate as low because of the ec2.0, though it is lower than with the 1.4, more due to exposure being off and the small dof. I fully expect my keeper rate to climb as I get more experience.

As to waiting for the 100mm - well a lot of people have, and for several years. Olympus are going to have to make that lens really special to match the available Sigmas.

Thank you Steve, I'll undoudtedly keep clicking away at insects, the more I see the more fascinating the details/colours become. It is truly a jungle (and very 'alien') - very much an exploration into the mysterious and strange.

Somehow none of these creatures seem small, they are the giants of their worlds, we are so large as to be unexplainable phenomena like the weather. But I'll try to get an idea for the challenge - I really aught to compete more.

One bit of hard learnt cloning advice - clean your screen first, it really is frustrating trying to clone out a screen mark.
