  • Arctic Break

A few fairly randomly-picked images from my week in the far north. All E-3 with 70-300, except the church, which is E-3 / 11-22. I had to make a back-lit shot, as the snow was too thick to get to the lit side, but note the distant reindeer.

Lovely shots Martin - all of them.

The backlit church is probably better as it is - it adds a bit of drama.

    Thanks for sharing.

Martin, nice series. I like how you caught the water in the first image. The lighting and colors in #5 are great.

Aaah! That church brings back LOTS of memories. Baptisms, funerals, confirmations. If you walk past the church it's a fantastic place to go fishing. We used to ride our bikes there nearly daily during the summer to fish. It's also a fantastic area for birdspotting/-photography. A big variety of arctic birds lives there.

For those of you who didn't get it : That's the church from my home place

Thanks for the comments, Radar - what a fantastic place to grow up. I'd seen pictures of the Church before, but they hadn't prepared me for how dramatic its setting really is. I'd love to go back in summer, sometime.

Another from the Finland/Norway series, a Common Shag taken from an open boat off the seabird island of Hornoy, off Vardo, Norway. Many people don't like flight shots with the wings down, but I think this shows off the 'scaly' appearance of the shag.

            As before, E-3, 70-300.

                  Appreciate all the comments.

As for a summer visit, I'm really glad I was able to go in winter, for the snow and for the ducks in particular, but summer for the waders must be fantastic - I've pencilled it in for next year (but don't tell my wife!). We did take the right turn after the tunnel - superb Steller's eider flock there, and I can believe it's good in summer too.

Cracking shots. Love the Grosbeaks, if that is what they are.

Yes - male (red) and female (gold) pine grosbeaks. Europe's largest finches - almost blackbird sized.
