said Pevsner, in his self appointed role as cataloguer of Englands architecture. Though what the locals said of Pevsner remains unrecorded.

Maybe time has eased the opinion on both sides, certainly Pevsners judgement would seem an unwarranted slur on the this victorian church. Perhaps, like me, you find the interpretation of the Gothic in 'contemporary' material both appropriate and characterful.

By todays standards, I cannot think that anyone would agree with Pevsner. You have certainly brought out enough to ensure his opinion is contradicted. I guess it was a case that it was too modern in its time. The interior is welcoming and, as you say has a warm appearance.

That interior shot is really something.

I think the church is quite pleased with the claim - it features in the little church history they produce. But certainly it doesn't feel warranted by either the interior or exterior.

I have seen far worse, I rather like the brick in this case. (wouldn't look so good in Accrinton Brick?)
