Maybe it's a geologist noting that that work was the only one in it's original position "Rock in Place"

    # 1 for me as a picture, but I do think the tone mapping is a bit too much

      Re: Rip

Thanks Andy, it sure was a strange place on the top of a mountain, I think I could hear guitars playing (Deliverance )

Yeah the HDR is OTT, but I was trying to learn how John Musicman gets his HDR so dramatic, I usually use the technique of creating HDR from different exposures of a RAW file, on these shots I used proper JPEG bracketing and found it much better, esp for movement in clouds

Hehe... my shots all have different settings applied in Photomatix Steve, depending on my mood, the subject and its composition.

I can state one thing though, I NEVER have the Light Smoothing setting below the middle radio button - each to their own, but those positions are used for the garish and very ugly side of HDR/Tonemapping imho.

              Re: Rip

The second batch are better and I do like No3. No 2 is also good, but note that the clouds near the top of the frame have become unnaturally blue, indicating a little too much processing.

                Re: Rip

I'd agree with Johns comments, the UK sky seldom tends to that vibrant blue which is more associated with near space. (though a polariser can produce a similar appearance).

Just a reminder that Photomatix has a 'natural' pre-set, it is actually quite a good starting point for creating natural looking images, particularly if you've shot over a reasonable range.

Thanks for the further comments, hdr can produce nice looking natural shots, when you dont over do it

Yes I did overdo it a little on no2, I used photomatix to produce the HDR and then I saturated the colours more in photoshop and thats where the clouds have blown in colour
