Last year I was very kindly gifted a 11-22 four thirds lens by a member on here , and while being eternally grateful the lens hasn’t seen much use due to the fact the front focus rubber has turned into a sticky goo .
Googling it this morning it turned out it’s a fairly common problem with lenses of this vintage due either to the glue used or to sun tan oil attacking the rubber .. so having a few replacement rubber lens bands that fitted I decided to give it a go .. first off I tried cutting the focus ring off but it turns out it’s a outer rubber layer with a metal band under ….
Next move and once I had started it had to be continued using a scalpel modelling knife I gradually sliced off the very sticky rubber top layer laborious job took around 30 minutes .. once done I carefully trimmed off any high spots , then gave the whole ring and the zoom rubber below a wipe over with “sticky stuff remover” once happy that no further stickiness remained it was simply a case of fitting the new ridged focus ring rubber over the lens front and ensuring it was properly in place ..
next step was to try out the lens . All o.k and nice to hold
Hope this of help to anyone else that has a similar problem ,and as I said initially it appears to be a common problem
