  • Aberlady Bonspiel!

For the first time since 1981, the lads and lassies of Aberlady Curling Club were able to actually hold a Curling match on the lake at Gosford House where I work last Sunday. Curling was traditionally held there going back at least 150 years, but the shift in the climate patterns in the past decades has reduced the times the lake has frozen enough to even trot a mouse across, let alone curl! The ice was very lumpy and slow, so the action wasn't exactly fast!

        Re: Aberlady Bonspiel!

What a fabulous winter we've had, and brilliant to see this traditional use of the ice as a counter to all the 'horror' stories about people walking on ice - of course ice can be unsafe but it's good to be reminded that there can be safe use of the fantastic winter conditions.
I gather that there was also speed skating on the Fens as well which I would have loved to have photographed. But thanks for showing these photos - it would be great to see a few other traditional winter sports (cross country skiing, etc.) being photographed and displayed on this forum too!
