  • The Great Ocean Road (for Anne and Barrie)

The Great Ocean Road is a 243km scenic route on the Victorian coast between Torquay and Warrnambool featuring spectacular cliffs overlooking the Southern Ocean.

I was prompted to dig these out of the shoe box by Barrie who left a nice picture of him and his lovely wife, Anne on my 'Sing Along' thread

Olympus C5050UZ - 1998 archives (OMG, how time flies!)

It's a popular destination, you just need patience and a little extra time getting there

Beautiful. We visited there in about 1987. I took 3 rolls of film with me! Would love to go back now.

It may not have been such a drama getting there in 1987. The above were taken February 1998 when the world and it's mother were trying to get there.

I know so little about the country of my birth! Is that the 'road'?

I see it is 0845 in the UK, 1845 here.
Lorell messaged me on the WC forum today to say how surprised she was when she heard my voice at last night's meeting ... she thought I sounded more American than Aussie!
She enjoyed watching the recording and I had to ask her to send me the YouTube link as I couldn't find it anywhere here. I was pretty horrified when I realised I wasn't wearing my dentures!
I was blind sighted as to how the meeting would be run, Anyway, I may change my mind about Zoom - as you've probably figured, I can change my mind about anything at the drop of a hat.

Mark, I didn't notice anything untoward! We'll concentrate on the grid view from now on so everyone will be smaller on the screen 😊

    Hi Mark -

When we visited Australia I was quite a novice with a camera. In fact the Fuji Finepix 4700 Zoom we took was quite small and took a reasonable picture.
After searching through cards and discs I found a missing folder containing quite a number of Australian pictures we took - a couple below and I know Anne would like to add a comment too.

Barrie, beautiful additions to Mark's series.
Though, you wife with bird in hand stole the show.

    Hi Barrie

Thanks for sharing those Great Ocean road pics, your Fuji did a good job, especially the fab shot of Anne feeding one of her Crimson Rosella friends, presumably at Wilsons Promontory?
I am envious as I have not yet been successful in capturing a Crimson Rosella in spite of having spotted them on rare occasions. They are not very prevalent in this neck of the woods.

      Oh Mark,
One could not tell that you didn't have your dentures in. Now the cat's out of the bag.
What I meant about you sounding American is what I hear in my head when I read your text, When I read text, I read it out loud in my head, doesn't everyone? Well when I have read all your texts these past few years, I read it with an American accent. So, I never paired your voice up with an Aussie accent. On the video, you don't sound American at all. And you sounded like you had teeth in your mouth.

These photos are amazing,Mark. It looks like a true Mecca for tourists as you later pictures prove it. Is there enough parking for all of those cars? I wonder how many rolls of film YOU went through Mark and how have the rock formations and shoreline changed in the last 22 years. Priceless captures.

        Hi Mark -

Thanks for posting your Great Ocean Road pix - they brought back some great memories. Glad we didn't see queues of cars as you have shown - we were there for my cousin's wedding at the end of July (2001) so traffic along the coast road from Adelaide where my Oz family live right through to Melbourne was sparse. As Barrie mentioned it was the start of digital photography for us and, in fact, I took my much loved at the time Nikon (ugh!) film camera with me. This is my pic from one of the viewing platforms - I know one of the Apostles has disappeared since, not sure if any others have or at least been further eroded?

I wish you lot would stop posting these superb photo's of OZ. My feet are so itching to get up and go that I can hardly get any
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

Thanks Wally, unfortunately current Oz views are on hold for now as our government (like yours no doubt) has placed us all in home detention, ad infinitum..

          Nice images here.
The Road was on our bucket list for next year, but that's likely to get delayed a bit now.
Great to keep it in mind, though!
          Regards,

There is a certain uncertainty about when we can travel again. I hope you'll be able to make it next year.
We would have been in Tasmania right now had all remained normal. As it is, we can't even make it to Melbourne.

Thanks Lorell, the traffic was heading to the Lorne festival where unlimited parking areas were available.
Many would have camped there, and the accommodations would have been fully booked.
All were shot digitally on an Oly C5050Z, a 5MP compact, so my film days were over.
The isolated rock in the opening picture was known as London Bridge until the "bridge" collapsed. Two lucky tourists were temporarily stranded..

              Wikipedia:
"This stack was formed by a gradual process of erosion, and until 1990 formed a complete double-span natural bridge.
The span closer to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly on 15 January 1990, leaving two tourists (Kelli Harrison and David Darrington)
stranded on the outer span before being rescued by police helicopter."

                Me too

My last holiday on film was Australia across the 2004/5 New year... I think it was more like 30 rolls for me and I really wish that I had gone digital at that point because I find that I have never used 90% of the slides, just the very few that I have scanned

                Nice set of pictures BTW

                Regards
