  • An attempt at a high resolution stacked photo...

So, I thought I'd try out a little stacking, with a difference....

Set up the camera on a tripod in the dining room and a Mahonia flower nailed to the table, and took nearly 30 high resolution (50MP JPEGS) and see where I got too...

    The image:

There's a little bit of ghosting from the stacking program (Zerene Stacker) but overall I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome. The original DoF was around 2mm but the stacked image is around 70mm in depth - I haven't measured this exactly as your maths will tell!

The camera was set to High Resolution Image, E-M1ii
Lens was set to 1:1 Olympus 60mm Macro and F8

Overall this took me about 5 hours to produce this photo, as I had to learn the new software and the stacking is done manually, after a few attempts. Each attempt to produce an image took around an hour, as each of the 30 photos took nearly 30s to take, the copying, and stacking then took another 30m or so... So this is my final of 7 attempts today - what do you think of the result?

I did one stack using .ORF files so that I could see what the workflow was like, and this increased to work considerably, but allowed for a more latitude on the post processing, as you could change the levels on each individual photo and then export them as JPEGs for the stacking software to process.

For those that regularly perform stacks, is there a better software suite than Zerene to use? I've just been using the free 30 day trial so far. (for a Mac running the latest OS)

Interesting - I've not had a serious go at stacking yet. Just a bit of experimentation with focus stacking in Photoshop. It worked well though.

Just over a year ago I went to a WEX tutorial on Macro focus stacking.
          Very enjoyable and informative.
I used my EM1 MkII but I have also done some stacking with my EM1-X.
I have done them all in camera and been generally very pleased with the results.
I shoot Raw but the camera also adds high def Jpegs and the end result is a top quality Jpeg.
Here is one of the photos from the tutorial.
This one is 15 photos in sequence F16 aperture.
I don't have any plug ins for photoshop to do focus stacking.
I'd like to ask why you didn't use the in camera facility.

It was simply to try the high resolution photos with stacking.

I’ve used the in camera stacking and bracketing with success in the past - so it was a case of I wonder what happens if.....

Oh and photoshop can do stacking without any plugins, but it couldn’t cope with 30 50MP photos and crashed!

And I can do that too with very large panoramas!
Whereabouts in Photoshop are the commands. I'd like to give it a try myself.
