As I try to get back into photography, thought I would have a go at my first love, motor sport, since getting a DSLR.
So as I have joined the forum guess I should post a pic or two

Trouble is I must really embrace the digital age as I found my self trying to make every "shot count" just like the old days of film when I could only afford to do about five rolls with processing per meeting. Old habits
On a side note don't the top end Canons rattle through frames I could not get over how fast they were with their super sized fast lens attached. They seemed to be doing a burst of 10, 12 or more shots in a couple of seconds as each car went by.

Did we take better pics in the "good old days" when most people had to try and "make it count". Instead these days as long as you have the memory you can blast away to your hearts content and sort them out latter, the Canon boys must have had 1000's to sort

    Re: Rally-cross

    Welcome!

Love the panning shots, some of them are cropped too tightly in the frame, cant see enough of whats going on but then thats down to personal taste.

Hope you don't mind but I had a play with one:

    Before

    After

If you don't like just say the word and it will be gone!

    Keep it up
    Tim
    Thanks

Just had a play in Photobucket and think I have the answer. May be slightly over done but I get the idea.
My problem, I'm inclined to treat the DSLR as a 35mm film camera and forget this brave new world of digital

A good set of shots from Mallory Park. I do agree they could do with some adjustment to the exposure, to bring out the detail. The colours which are all important in motorsport will then stand out. The panning has given good snse of the speed of the event.
There is nothing wrong with trying to make every shot count. Why not have many shots to choose from rather than just a few.

            Mike,

Like the shots. What kit were you using?

I was thinking of going to Mallory park next weekend. Never been before. Any things to know? Best places to sit etc?

            Kind regards

I will be there this coming Sunday for the historic car meeting, should be plenty of interesting machines http://www.themastersseries.com/gallery.html

              I'm using a E-510 with the 50-200mm zoom.

As for the best place to sit, unlike most other tracks the whole of the circuit is good from a "taking pictures" point of view with no catch fencing or wide areas of gravel trap between you and the tarmac. When I went regularly, 20 odd years ago I used to like the run into the first bend Gerald's, for the start of races where you might get some "action". The Hairpin is quite a good spot, you are really close to the cars but you can't see the rest of the track from here. As I said you can get good shots from most of the track but you are better off on the back of the track as the afternoon passes by so you are not shooting into the sun.
Don't forget the track is only 1.3 miles long so can be easily walked around so you can take pictures from different aspects.

                Hi Mike,

I did the follow in Paintshop pro:
                Noise reduction
                Boosted the contrast
                Sharpened it a little
And added a little red and green saturation.

One of the things I have learnt about digital is that processing is very important!

                Thanks

Mike. Stay with the thinking. I just wish I could go back to the days when I didn't shoot so many. The discipline of making every shot count is worth it I think, you just end up with loads of very similar shots.
Nice shots BTW, agree with Tim, some are cropped a bit tight for my liking.
