  • Acrobatic Fly

This chap kindly posed for me last weekend before buzzing off. They are not the prettiest of God's creatures but they are certainly interesting to look at close-up

    E-3 + EC-20 + MF-1 + OMZ 90mm f/2.0 + FL36R on-camera with home-made diffuser. Slight levels, sharpening and minimal crop to 4:3 aspect ratio in Raw Therapee, resized in the Gimp.

    Cheers,

Lovely sharp image with nice OOF background.

      Dear John,

Well what a smashing way to start the week viewing this image. It shows just how good legacy lenses are when combined with a talented shooter.

      Monday is looking good already!

Lovely sharp fly - not sure that I'd trust my eyes to give that level of focus on a manual lens.

          Re: Acrobatic Fly

Thank you John, Chris and Nick for the kind comments

The beauty of the 90mm OM Zuiko is that it gathers so much light. Even with the EC-20 giving an effective 180mm f/4.0 the viewfinder on both E-1 and E-3 remains bright and easy to focus. In some respects the narrow depth of field helps as well in that the subject is very definitely in focus or not, no "maybes" to worry about. You can focus at the f/2.8 stop and, at a pinch, at f/4.0 but at f/5.6, my usual taking aperture with EC-20 and FL36R, things get tricky so I usually focus wide-open and then stop down. The increased depth of field and the darkened viewfinder mean that the "maybes" creep back in

          Cheers,

          JohnGG

I'm glad this is a Macro shot as I'd hate to think there were creatures like this flying around London that size
