I quite like the 2'nd though you were pushing the dynamic range just a bit - but it's a nice use of features to make the composition.
The first suffers again from the very contrasty conditions - I wonder if centre weight rather than matrix might have helped pull back the feather details - but white feathers are always a challenge in the rare sunlight.

Thanks Nick,
#1 You're right, I must try to pay more attention to metering. I was disappointed in not getting more detail in the feathers. I'll try what you suggest next time.
#2 I did lighten the shadows but couldn't recover the detail by the dooway. It was so sunny yesterday morning it was very difficult seeing the result in the LCD... poor excuse I know. Wouldn't have swapped the weather for dull/rain though!

I have my E-3 set up to show the histograms in review mode - and they are far more easy to see in bright light - more importantly they give me a good check on exposure.
OK the copy of the picture is small unless I magnify it - but I already know what I've taken.

I'll do that too.
I must learn to slow down a bit I think. All this I know but I seem to be chasing the next 'opportunity'. ... which is, of course, pointless if you don't capture it properly.
Thanks Nick

Amazing....just learned SO much AGAIN.
I was doing some macro shots in the gloomy garden yesterday and thought I was underexposed all the time but when i got inside they were much better exposed.
AS above I must also learn to slow down....and not forget what everyone on here keeps telling me.I keep meaning to check the histograms more often.
Luckily I managed a couple of decent ones despite myself.
As for your shots..
#1 love the reflection
#2 I blew it up and did a dodge on the doorway @ 10% and kept painting until some light/shade showed up.Have a go.

Thanks Keith,
#2 - I'm powering up PP now to have a go (unless the good Mrs Jones spots I'm in here!)
#1 - I didn't notice until I got home that within the reflection you can see one webbed foot below the water.
