  • More from Winchester

The Winnal Moors Nature Reserve (very close to Winchester city centre) reopened last week following much work by volunteers in improving paths and building new boardwalks and bridges.

    We visited today:-

Two views of the River Itchen as it flows though the reserve.

    One of the new bridges.

It is a delightful oasis of calm.

See Hampshire & IoW Wildlife Trust

Comments/suggestions regarding the images most welcome.

Like that second shot, I can imagine it is a very photogenic place at dawn or dusk. We called in at St Cross last weekend when we were there.. I wonder if that is close to this Nature Reserve??

Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

Winnal Moors is on the north side of the City, St Cross being on the south. It is less than 10 minutes walk from King Alfred's statue. The entrance is opposite the Willow Tree pub in Durngate. Pop SO23 8QX into Google maps. There are car parks nearby which are free on Sunday.

We had hoped for dragonflies but saw none. Perhaps it was due to the strong wind.

The calmness is very evident. It is a lovely stretch of water

Time of day, wind and heat seem to be big factors in most insect patterns. You can usually feel and smell good locations - tucked away, still, warm and maybe a little overgrown.

Definitely a fan of the work of the trusts in my experience their reserves are well worth a visit.

But definitely post dragonflies when you get some.
