  • 'Ere be dragons...

As everybody else is showing off their lovely pictures of dragonflies, I didn't want to be left out so here's one I took on Saturday.

A broad bodied chaser (male) that took quite a fancy to the aerial on somebody's car in the car park - well, I suppose to a dragonfly it's just another branch to perch on!

Taken with the Sigma 150mm macro and FL-36 flash.

Well not quite everyone Thea - I'm tormented by chasers that vanish temptingly into the distance, so all my judgements are tinged with unrequited envy.

A couple of lovely shots - I particularly like the expression on the second one, can't help but feel he knows he is taking the mick'.

Well done Thea. I share Nick's comments including the 'grin'.

Very nice, is this a good year for Dragonfiles or something? - I don't often get around wetlands so I wouldn't know.

Is that a droplet of water on the end of the wing of the grinning one?

          Re: 'Ere be dragons...

          Thanks all

Nick - I was evidently very lucky to get such an obliging model ! Seriously though - if you spot where they like to perch, then move very slowly and carefully around them (and keep very still if they do fly off - they often come back), you might just be able to get that photo you're after.

I don't know if this is an especially good year for dragonflies and damselflies (unlike the hordes of Painted Lady butterflies we've had passing through here), and there wasn't any water in the immediate area I saw this either, so I guess it was just a case of 'right place, right time'.

Oh - I think that's a bit of cobweb on the end of the wing of the 'grinning one' as well.
