Yes cracking shots of an insect I've never seen before. Nicely done Dave.

Thanks all for the likes and comments.

I’ve been lucky enough to have two species of Hawk moth visit the garden this year, the first was a Broad-bordered Bee moth and then the Hummingbird Hawk moth.

They move incredibly quickly and I’ve yet to see one land on a flower.

Great shots of the moth feeding. It's fascinating that a moth has evolved independently to adapt the same solution as the humming birds.

They feed in the daytime, including dusk, and go for coloured flowers, whereas night feeders like the white (ish) scented flower.

They like Valerian and we usually get a brief visit each year.

I have never had one framed or in focus.

One summer evening, walking across a village square in southern France, we saw lots of these on such flowers.

Splendid shots Dave. I haven't seen one for a couple of years and I have never managed to photograph one.

Excellent shots Dave. Had one on my Valerian too, but not managed a good shot yet.

We planted Valerian in our garden last year, specifically to attract these, it worked.

I've been told they're also attracted to Honeysuckle.

                        Thanks Ron,

I suspect there are a reasonable number around however, they're not easy to spot.

As I mentioned in a previous post, Valerian really does attract them.

Good luck in getting some images, I'll watch for them.

                            Re: Hummingbird Hawk Moth

I hadn't seen one of these for years but just now, as I was sitting at the computer, one flew in through the window and did several circuits of the room before flying out again. Yesterday the same thing happened with a bat, only it crash landed in the bathroom behind the toilet and I had to help it out. It was the first time I've ever seen one in daylight.

Just been chasing one round the garden... Still no decent shots yet though.
