  • Digital Dinosaur and lovely Lumix visit Brugge

It's taken me a long time to get there, but I finally visited Brugge a couple of weeks back. No idea why we insist on calling it Bruges - which is the French way and French doesn't actually go down so terribly well in this part of Flanders. Oh well.....

The 'only' camera I took with me was the E-1, which is as lovely to use as it ever was. And I mainly used my recently acquired PanaLeica 14-150 - quite simply the best superzoom I've used to-date - supplemented by the 25mm Zuiko pancake lens (nice and compact with decent image quality). A few images from Brugge and nearby Flanders Fields (Ypres, Passchendaele):

If you've not been, I'd highly recommend this beautiful town and its historic surroundings. If you've not tried it, I'd highly recommend the E-1 14-150 combo too! This post isn't intended to click bait, but there are some more images if you really have nothing better to do in my blog link!

    Cheers,

    Jon

A lovely set Jon. I like them all, but the one of the rooftops is quite special.

That E-1 still delivers the goods I can see!

Yes - variant of a Kodak sensor design also used by Leica and Hasselblad. The colours it produces are lovely.

I looked at your blog Jon and was very impressed with the Bruges set and most of the shots from elsewhere too. I must say the colours out of the E-1 definitely have a certain "je ne sais quoi" about them.

Thank you! You're right about the look of images from the E-1 although it wouldn't be my first choice in poor light given noise quickly becomes an issue. Over the weekend I was taking some publicity shots of a dress rehearsal at a local theatre in South London and the E-1 would have been hopeless for that both in terms of focusing and image quality. I was using ISO3200 even with an f2.8 lens, in quite a dimly lit space, and it's amazing how good the images are from modern equipment. Some things really have improved since 2004!

Well you are certainly doing the camera and lens combo justice Jon those are lovely images and as Paul said a great blog too. Great to see the old lens getting the light it deserves. I know the E1 has a unique colour rendition but I'm sure that little added sparkle is down to the lens. It just seemed to do that to images whatever camera I shot with it. I'm really glad it's got a good home.
