  • A few from the lakes

We had a family weekend in the Lakes recently, so photography was definitely secondary, but I did manage a couple of early morning trips plus a middle of the day walk.
As my time was limited all were easily accessible spots, at Derwentwater, Buttermere and Blea Tarn.

As soon as we returned home we booked a trip to the Isle of Skye for 7 days in a couple of months - I really cant wait!

Some good shots there, Chris, glad you managed to make some time for yourself.

The lakes really are beautiful. I'm really happy you did them justice with the colour they deserve. #1,3 &5 for me.

Super phots Chris. If you are asking for comments, I love No 1, but would consider cropping out the millennium stone in the foreground. JMHO

There might be a better way of showing it. The last photo is really nice. (No accounting for tastes)..

Chris, seeing as you welcome comments good or bad, as I see it the millennium stone being an unnatural element of the composition conflicts with the natural beauty of the lake. Focussing solely on the stone from a low camera angle at a wide aperture would have made it a strong point of interest set against a bokeh of blue tones. It would also have raised the POI closer to the shoreline, which by the way would look better if it were level. The peaks with the lake in the foreground is a beautiful standalone feature. That said, it is in all a magnificent set in which you have captured the timeless beauty of the Lakes District.
Edit: In this reconstruction, the stones would sit more comfortably a tad to the right.

In this rearrangement, the stones would sit more comfortably a tad to the right. You are now entitled to kick the crap out of my stuff if you wish!

That's interesting Mark, thanks. It certainly accentuates the the stones, although I'm not 100% sure what i think of it
It at least demonstrates what a slightly different angle could/would have made to the overall composition

Re: A few from the lakes

In fact, thinking about it more, I’m surprised at myself that I didn’t try the low angle and shallow dof on the day Mark, as it is something I do utilise. Perhaps when stood infront of a grand vista for the first time, it’s all too easy to switch into standard landscape thinking, getting everything front to back. Plus I was already overdue back at the cottage by this time after a failed shoot at Ashness Jetty (that’s my excuse anyway)!
I am happy with my effort regardless, but am glad of your suggestion making me think.

I’ve posted this shot before, but it’s a favourite of mine from the Peak District last year, where a low angle, shot wide open and close to the subject, I think, demonstrates what you mean? Ignoring all the shenanigans with the light!

I haven't seen your thistle shot before. The low camera angle illustrates well what I was trying to say.
The golden glow of the late afternoon sun has cast your thistle in a strange light, similar to that
caused by a forestry burn off that gave my Black Dog Ride images a burnt orange cast.
