Re: Kingfisher portraits
If you find a setting that helps a lot please let me know, I usually use multi shot low silent on MF with focus assist red, as fast a shutter speed practible and about 250mm lens, basically estimating dive position with enough DOF and turning focus ring during flight as distance dictates. All stabalisation off because of rapid camera action and shutter speed. Also found if I use CAF instead I set focus limiter 3 settings to suit on FN button for various distances, but not much success with auto method. the hover and dive is also difficult as the distance with busy backgrounds is awkward to say the least.

Re: Kingfisher portraits
Stunning images Phill, perfect lighting, superb definition.
I am simply amazed as to how you ever managed to be in the right place at the right time, and with masterful use of your camera.
As I mentioned before, I am much taken by the richness of colour of your Kingfisher specie.

Re: Kingfisher portraits
Mark I was just lucky to be there at the right time on a rare very bright February day. Some people had been there all day to get the same shots I did. This little reserve is only 15 minutes from where I live so now I've found it I can pop down when ever I have a few spare minutes on the off chance.
As for the colours he was pretty bright in the sun but the raw files do look rather dull so I did tweak the vibrance and saturation a little. Not much though as it soon gets too overdone.

Re: Kingfisher portraits
Me too Walter, I use vivid all the time in jpg. Then when processing my raw files I'll use the jpg as a guide.
That's an excellent shot to btw.
