Catalina Flying Boat

This Catalina flying boat which was participating in Great Yarmouth Airshow, was photographed from my garden on Sunday. I was particularly pleased to get these shots as my father was stationed in India with the RAF dugring the War and was working on Catalinas. He was a keen photographer and I was fascinated by his photographs of these planes when I was young. This is the first time I have seen a Catalina and it was an exciting experience for me.

Thats based at Duxford if you want to see it up close, often flies "over" (The A11 is about 400m away and that seems to be what they're following when they go past!) my house - don't think I saw it Sunday, though it did fly over earlier in the week!

Great shots there, Ron. Brings back memories of when in 1951 I actually flew on the Sunderland flying boat that operated out of Hobart, Tasmania from the River Derwent, direct to Sydney where it landed at Rose Bay. I was 16 at the time and it was kind of like my first solo adventure away from home. It was a magical experience.

I always feel that the Catalina is one of the most graceful planes ever made.

I really ought to make sure I have my camera outside with me at all times!

It’s just flown over - returning to Duxford, lowering its undercarriage as it passed!
