  • Goldfinches with my MC-14

Three shots of some of the Goldfinches in my garden taken with the 300mm f4 and my new MC-14. I find the combination takes a lot of concentration to hold it steady but I am quite pleased with the results. The new small single AF point helps no end too.

    E-M1 II, 300mm f4 and MC-14.

Really beautiful shots Ron. Slightly nervous bokeh in #2 spoils it a tad for me though.

Absolutely fabulous set Ron, especially your opening shot.

Thanks Marlene. They were taken hand held, although I think I was sitting down which helps. I never use a tripod as I don't like carrying the extra weight when I am walking about.

Take a look at either a Manfrotto BeFree or a Vanguard 235 Ron, they are both small, light and easy to carry in one hand.

If you tend to stand in one place for long, I'd recommend fitting a Jobu Jr. Deluxe gimbal to either tripod, even with the gimbal fitted either setup can be carried easily in one hand.

My wife and I both have these tripod/gimbal combinations, I think they're excellent.

Thanks for the suggestion Dave but I really don't want to carry a tripod at all. The camera and lens are quite heavy enough and I spend more time walking around than sitting in one spot waiting for birds to appear.

I have a Manfrotto 190 CX3 carbonfibre tripod which is very good and pretty light. I use it with a Manfrotto 701 HDV video head for my scopes but I rarely use a scope these days so the tripod and head sit at home unused most of the time.
