Actually it was through the double glazing! Maybe our windows are cleaner than yours?

        Re: Great Spotted Woodpecker

One of my favourite birds but we rarely if ever see one in our garden (and its not that visible when out and about locally)

Good detail and I really like the way you have kept the dark detail

(its good to see someone else has nice clean windows )

She's a nice looking bird. You're lucky to see one that close. (It is a she, BTW, the 'he' has a bit of red on the back of his head.)

Thanks for info. I looked them up on the RSPB website and was surprised to find that there are only about 140,000 breeding pairs in the UK. That's really not a very large number so I guess I am lucky to see one at all, let alone so close. It was pecking away at a branch on our recently-pruned apple tree. Maybe 15' from the conservatory window.

I've seen other woodpeckers in the garden too - but they were a vivid green colour.

That is a great shot Paul and you are so lucky to have woodpeckers visiting your garden. I am envious. Your vivid green ones are rather conveniently called Green Woodpeckers.

The green ones are yaffles. Quite a harsh call. We very occasionally see one on the verge, looking for ants. But I've never managed to grab a photo when they're doing that, just one a while back on some wetland vegetation at Minsmere.
