John Clayton was a successful lawyer in the family firm and took over from his father as town clerk in Newcastle. This prestigious post granted him huge power in the local community and his business success lead him to become quite wealthy.
He started excavations at the family mansion in Chesters, site of the acient roman fort. This became a lifelong interest and he purchased any land that came up for sale that contained a portion of Hadrian's Wall or the local roman forts.
It is due to his diligence in preserving these sites that we have as much roman remains that we do. The Clayton Collection is now housed in a purpose built museum at Chesters.
