  • Oly Lomo..

    Hi,

Just been playing with a few pics. I'm trying to learn more PP skills rather than just sticking to my dirty HDRness.

I've been thinking about Lomo and I reckon one of the camera would take some mint shots with a derelict feel. So i'm set about trying to recreate the effect..

I think the final image still needs something, I'm not sure what yet but I've enjoyed playing with PS.

    Comments welcome.

    Lomo effect

Straight out the camera as JPG

ps the pic ain't so special, its the processing I was concentrating on.

    Cheers

    Hey Garrie

I like the 'lomo' effect you have presented here, though I don't know what this actually is. It seems to me to be similar to the full-frame effect one sees on wide angle lenses placed on the D700/D3 type cameras.

In my opinion the effect is certainly an improvement on the original; the colours are far richer, the contrast is greater, and the overall appearance is much improved. Not so sure about the vignette effect though, perhaps it could be 'feathered' a little more rather than such an abrupt'ish appearance.

Overall I like it though, works very well.

So tell me... what is 'lomo'...?

      Cheers for the comments John.

From what I understand a Lomo is a cheap Russian camera that produces a "cheap" looking over saturated pic with vignetting.

      Heres a wikipedia link.

I've added a little grain to the picture which I've added below.

I think its slowly starting to get somewhere ish maybe lol..

        Re: Oly Lomo..

Lomo is a very cheap Russian made film camera with poor optics that invariably produces soft, vignetted images usually with a healthy dose of flare and very often light leaks from the poorly constructed body. Holga is another make of camera that fits into this category.

Generally, they can best be described as toys rather than serious cameras BUT they do produce very stylized images in the right hands and the optical failings can be used very creatively indeed. As a bonus, no two cameras are alike as far as the combination and severity of these flaws is concerned, thanks to the shocking quality control, therefore each camera is capable of producing images with a unique signature.

Some of the results obtained by skilled photographers are really striking. Just try typing "Lomo" or "Holga" into Google images search, or visit one of the many groups on flickr.

Garrie is attempting to digitally recreate the "Lomo" effect and for a first attempt has made a pretty fair stab at it.

          Re: Oly Lomo..

          Hi John,
A couple of years ago, I went to an exhibition of "Lomo" images taken by a guy who in his early days was something of an artist - trained at art school etc. In later years he ended up as an air steward!

But that was deliberate - to give him access to the great capital cities of the world. Then one day he spotted a Lomo camera in an airport shop- absolutely cheap, plastic and simple film camera. But he was inspired by the thing, and so off he went with it, but not shooting the stuff we do ... He went for time exposures, since that is one trick of that camera - just holding the shutter open. He panned it sideways, up and down, any direction, picking out bright artificial lighting, whether in H Kong, LA, Paris, wherever.

Then he had 2m wide enlargements made - and these were stunning. Vivid, surreal colours like brushstrokes.

Anyway, that's how one guy uses a Lomo.

More usually, to lomo means to simply wave the camera around, and snap away, allowing the subject matter to be .... whatever .... sort of creative anyway but meant to be a window on the world.
