  • I didn't expect this!

I was indoors today when I became aware of the drone of a small plane which seemed to be staying about for rather a long time. I went to the kitchen door to have a look and was surprised to see two planes looping-the-loop and performing aerobatics, complete with smoke trails.

I dashed indoors to get my camera and fired off some shots. I started in my BIF mode but that didn't work very well, so I switched to manual focus which was much better. They are not very good as they are quite large crops but it something that I don't see every day, so I was pleased to get anything.

From a bit of googling it seems the planes are Twisters but I am sure somebody will be able to identify the team for me. I have no idea why they were there.

    E-M1, 50-200 SWD and EC-14.

Interestingly the Twister design started as a radio controlled model aircraft and was "upscaled" to a real aircraft.

      Great shots Ron.

Out of interest what is your BIF setting? I tried some gull shots at WWT Llanelli yesterday with very mixed results! My shots of kite surfers were better.

Thanks for your comments Peter and Amanda.

Thank you for the information about the aerobatic team Peter. It's good to hear that they are planning an airshow in Yarmouth next year as the Lowestoft one was brilliant and a great loss to the summer season. I just hope that Yarmouth can get some of their money back as in Lowestoft a lot of people watched a terrific show without paying a penny.

Amanda my BIF settings are in a permanent state of flux and I still don't seem to have cracked it yet.

At the moment I am using the following:
          Shutter priority 1/1250 sec.
          CAF.
          Seq L 5 fps (although I also use Seq H 9 fps).
          Centre 9 AF points.
          Image stabilization off.

As I say, my results are mixed, like yours.

Thanks Ron. We are hoping to ride to the wetlands again tomorrow so I will try that and see if it changes. I was on A mode, seq L, 9 AF centre but with IS on. Also I tried C-AF + tracking which seemed OK on the kite surfers. They go straight so are more predictable than the gulls.

I'll try and post some shots when I get some time!

Thanks. Yes, it was a treat to have my own airshow in the back garden. The only drawback was that I had washing drying on the line, so it was tricky keeping my socks out of the frame.
