  • Little Terns fishing

We have a colony of Little Tern nesting about half an hour drive from home. This year 14 pairs have been counted, highest figure for many years. Close to the nesting grounds are some shallow lagoons with plenty of stickleback and small shrimps in.

Have been honing the focusing skills. Hard work, these guys are so swift, and you are depending on wind direction that dictates where they will go fishing. (There is only one access point to the site with reasonable distance to the action).

    Thanks for looking

A nice set, the first is really unusual, I can't work out what it's doing.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

It dived, struck (but from the pictures looks like it missed), then rose while shaking its head.

I did wonder if that's what it was doing. I've seen Tern species shaking their bodies while the head stays level but not shaking their heads.
