  • A Winter Walk on Whernside

    Hi there Everyone!

This years new years resolution was to put on my walking boots a bit more often and get out on the hills, so my second trip out of the year was a walk up Whernside in the Yorkshire Dales, a hill I have never climbed before although spending pretty much every weekend in the dales for three years at university - we just always climbed Ingleborough instead.

Since the weather was nice I took a few pictures along the way - the colours really don't manage to convey just how beautiful and green the dales are in the spring.

    1. The Ribblehead Viaduct and Whernside in the snow

    2. Whernside Framed

    3. Waterfall in Force Gill

    4. And closer (40-150mm f4-5.6 at full stretch)

    5. Tarn on Greensett Moss as the clouds roll in

    6. Icy puddle at the top of Whernside

    7. Ingleborough from the top of Whernside

    8. Ribblehead from Whernside

    9. Gods own country.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting out to take these pictures - I hope you have enjoyed viewing them. Any comments welcome.

    Cheers,

    Ralph.

Thanks for this wonderful tour of the Whernside, Ralph, I am enjoying it so much.

Last night indeed I also enjoyed your Griff Rhs Jones Great Britain on ABC TV, of which I am a regular viewer. Last night's episode he took us to some place whose name I've forgotten (you may know where) it is famous for its very special gourmet oysters grown in mud at the bottom of an estuary and found nowhere else in the world that are exported to gourmet restaurants in Paris.

Makes my effort seem a little tame, Ralph, but I can assure you I felt as if I was with you, and thanks so much for a wonderful pictorial tour.
The picture tells the story, great when you have a bad memory.DW.

Nice set of images that bring back some great memories, Ralph
We spent a week in the Dales a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the area and the hills.
We just had to do the 3 Peaks which we found to be nice and easy(ish) with amazing views.
Really need to make a return visit sometime.

Re: A Winter Walk on Whernside

Lovely set of photos of an area I know well. Nos. 4,5 and 7 are the picks for me.

We just had to do the 3 Peaks which we found to be nice and easy(ish)
You did them individually or the whole Three Peaks Walk? I've never heard anyone describe the latter as easy(ish) before! I've done it twice but both occasions were about thirty years ago when I was somewhat fitter. One at a time these days .
                Regards

Re: A Winter Walk on Whernside

We did them all together Richard.
These days it would be one at a time

Back then we were used to bagging Munros, some of which required a long walk in just to reach the mountain then a long walk out again.
That was a few stones of weight ago though

Re: A Winter Walk on Whernside

I know the feeling . The Three Peaks has (have?) got very popular these days with crowds of sponsored walkers at summer weekends. A fine day this time of year is the best time to visit really - as Ralph's pictures amply demonstrate! The forecast is fine for tomorrow, so maybe ...

Re: A Winter Walk on Whernside

                          Hi there Everyone!

Many thanks to everyone for all their comments - they are all very welcome. It was a good walk for sure, and thoroughly enjoyed. I don't think that I could have done both the other "Peaks" that day - I might have managed Ingleborough too but certainly couldn't have managed Pen Y Ghent as well (and I would have regretted it the next day too!)

Internaut - I am not fortunate enough to live in the Yorkshire Dales, I live on the Wirral so it was about an hour and three quarters drive from home (through Liverpool rush hour) - depending on which side of Manchester you live you might well be closer than me.

Phil D - Thanks for your comments - we really should meet up at some point and have a walk round the Peak district.

Mike - Once upon a time I might have considered trying the Three Peaks in one day, but for now I like you am a couple of stone and a fair few years away from trying it now. I am however trying to get back to somewhere near where I used to be, so it might be a proposition for the future.

Richard - I do envy you living up there in North Yorkshire - as the last photo said, it's gods own country up there. Even in the summer when the place is full of tourists it is still worth climbing the hills for the views, but it was especially nice to have the place pretty much to myself.

Imageryone / Mark - I'm glad you enjoyed the little tour - it is a nice walk but the hill is steep in places.

OMUser - I would have to say that on that day the views would be better than London - it's well worth getting up here for a days walking (or a week for that matter as there are plenty of other great places to walk up here).

Raymondo - I am sure that you will really enjoy it up in the Yorkshire dales - it has always been one of my favourite places.

Weeman - It was a great day out, and a reminder that I should not have left it so long to get my walking boots out again.

Once again thank you to everyone who has looked and commented.

                          Cheers,

                          Ralph.

Splendid set - I specially like #5 (Ingleborough).

Ingleborough was the last walk I had have not walked in England/ Scotland for years. Lovely area.
