  • Egyptian Bathing (not Cleopatra)

These two Egyptian Geese were enjoying a wash and brush up in the sunshine at Oulton Broad on Wednesday. Not much sunshine today, just sleet and snow for most of the day. Incidentally the 'pool' is actually flooded grassland beneath the trees.

    E-M1, 50-200 SWD and EC-14.

Ron, do you happen to know how many breeding pairs there is in the UK these days? There was a few pairs breeding in Cheshire in the 90's.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Hi David. According to the RSPB site there about 1,100 pairs, although I suspect that is a conservative estimate. They seem to be everywhere in Norfolk and Suffolk now. They also breed successfully unusually early and late in the year.

Thanks Ron. I suspected there would have been a population explosion. One of the Cheshire sites they were breeding on also had a pair of Black Swans and some Bar-headed Geese. It makes you wonder where they're all escaping from.

There are lots in Essex too, we have quite a number of resident breeding pairs on our reservoir/reserve. We also have a resident "Odd Couple" consisting of an Egyptian and a Greylag/farmyard cross. Black Swans turn up periodically too.

          Regards.

Pretty birds. Don't think they are around here. But I haven't been looking.

They were introduced in the 18th century and there is a sizeable feral population across southern England.

                        It's Abberton Reservoir near Colchester.

My wife and I were for a number of years volunteers at the Essex Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre and reserve but had to give this up a few months ago due to her disability but we still visit quite often.
A globally important wetland site, crucial for wildfowl, with 40,000 ducks, swans and geese visiting each year.

Recently one of my sunset photos, taken at Abberton was used for one of the banners which are at the entrance to the centre/reserve. Printed up large quite well.

                        Regards.
