  • A few birds on a dry autumn day

Today was the first completely dry day for about a week, so I thought I would treat myself a walk from Leathes Ham in Lowestoft to Oulton Broad – one of my favourite routes for a gentle saunter.

I was pleased to see that the Pintails are starting to return to Leathes Ham for the winter and there were at least eight pairs there. They are one of my favourite ducks – so elegant.

I don't often think of photographing Mallards as they are so common but this plump drake looked so resplendent in the sunshine that I felt compelled to take his portrait.

There were large flocks of Long-tailed Tits in the trees and I spent a lot of time attempting to get shots of them amongst the branches. It nearly drove me mad, though, as they are extremely active and fast.

On the edge of Lake Lothing two Redshanks were feeding in the mud. They were extremely wary and time after time I would slowly squelch my way towards them, only for them to pipe loudly and take off and land where I had just come from.

All in all a very pleasant walk on an unbelievably mild November day.

I love your beautifully written commentary as much as your images of commonplace birds, especially the Mallards, Ron.

Love bird pics. Just noticed that the second duck has a blue feather flash. In Oz we have a Pacific Black Duck with the same flash. Just checked my archive out and while lots of pics of the duck - none showing the flash! So stole one of the internet. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...iosa)_RWD2.jpg

#1 is a great crisp shot but seems too clinical somehow whereas #3 exudes fluffiness and cuteness which makes it the better picture in my opinion.

The Redshank is quite a big crop, as I couldn't get close to them, but the Pintail is hardly cropped at all. People come to the park to feed the ducks and the Pintails are mixed in with all the Mallards, Tufted Ducks, Coots etc. so they come to within a couple of metres at times. It is remarkable, really, as anywhere else they are really distant.

Many thanks everybody for all the kind comments.

The Long Tailed Tit is the stand out for me.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Glad you got your walk in Ron - and you are so right about the Mallards. We tend to take them so much for granted.
No 1 for me - love the water and the feather detail.
You were well rewarded for your walk!

Thanks Ron....I was wondering how the Pintail was so big....lol
The kit has done really well to get the Redshank with a crop.

Nice to see a post from you again Keith. I miss your contributions here but I guess you are a fully paid up Canon user now. I hope it is working out well for you.
