I'm hoping Harold or Alf can help with an ID? Approx 0.75mm long, three toes on each foot and a false eye jewel on a translucent side panel with the eye beneth. Not a very good stack and this example was missing a part of a front leg. Any ideas?

Harold is much better than me. I reckon it a mite but unsure what type but similar this which is single shot.

A mite of the Cryptostigmata (now Oribatida?) or Seed Mites. The first I have seen with any hint of colour other than black or brown.

Seed Mite refers to their appearance. They are fungus eaters.

Yes, the same group. Probably a different genus. It is more like the common species in soil, Punctoribates punctum.

Thanks Harold and Alf. Great to have such an expert "resource" on here. I will look them up, and try and get a better shot. As for the colour, it is probably the LED lighting I'm trying out. There are 4 sources with 2 different temperatures. Stacked shots were OOC jpegs.

Thanks. It brought back a lot of memories.

I'm relieved to see that, although Cyptostimata is now Oribatida, Prostimata. Astigmata and Mesostigmata are still extant.

This guy is 0.25mm and moves at the speed of the proverbial, no chance of getting a stackable set in the time I had. Cropped from 2mm FoV.

The plump legs and antennae indicate that it is a juvenile.

The 2mm FoV was using a microscope objective relayed onto a Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lens. @ near focus gives 2mm FoV and infinity around 4mm with a working distance of 15mm or so. Dof is not very controllable without excessive vignetting though.

Pete,

The spider is the common yellow Crab Spider Misumena vatia and the butterfly is a Speckled Wood.

You have good framing, sharpness and DOF but I would like to see more contrast.

That's interesting, recommended practice being to keep the tube lens at infinity.
