But seriously, here's a living White Admiral from July (which was selected for explore on Flickr so somebody liked it...)

I'll stop now, as it is quite hard to find them without rips and chunks missing as they tend to get damaged easily by the brambles and dense undergrowth.

Not to mention being sucked into car engine bays...

Lovely shots Peter. I didn't see any White Admirals this year. They were not showing on the two days I looked for them in my usual hot spot.

Common Darter Dragonfly and Its Hunting Perch

Darter Dragonflies (Sympetrum spp) like to find a high (up to about 6 feet above the ground) perch from which to look for flying insect prey, and to which they return to eat their catch. Sometimes they have two or three such perches on a given day but, on this occasion, this male kept to one. That was bad news aesthetically, as this rusty tip of an iron rod does nothing for the images. I have cropped as much of that out as I think valid.

I was positioned with a wooden trellis frame between myself and the perch. This permitted me to rest the camera on the woodwork, as the cost of being about twice the ideal distance from the subject. So all of the images have been cropped but half or a little more.

In the second image the Darter has caught a small fly, typical prey.

In the sixth image it was curling its abdomen down and forward. It did this only once during about half an hour and I don't know the function of the contortion.

The takeoffs were to fast to even see in the viewfinder and the return flights still a bit too fast to get an in-flight one which was sharp.

Olympus EM-1 (Aperture Priority), Panasonic 100 - 400 mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm at f8 (first two images) or f10, sunlight, hand-held.

Further to my earlier post about yellow and red butterflies being seen as white/cream and red in camera, yesterday I was at a Macro Masterclass with Marcus Clackson at the Stratford Butterfly Farm.

Interestingly, I again found that some yellow markings on the butterflies turned out cream in the viewfinder, LCD screen (and image files) - this time when using my EM1 II rather than my Pen-F. I had already discussed the problem with Marcus, and so showed him both the butterflies and my shots. He then also took some pics using his camera and found the same thing happening to him!

We agreed that the problem must be rooted in how our eyes were perceiving the colours on the butterflies, but at least I am reassured that the fault wasn't in my cameras or my settings

Centipede Through Laowa 25mm x2.5 - x5 at x2.5

This centipede was immobile, possibly about to moult, so it is a bit slouched. The first image is cropped by ca 50%, the second by about a third.

The stereo is crosseye.

Olympus EM-1 (manual mode), Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5x-5x ultra-macro at x2.5 and f11, triple TTL flash hand-held.

Green Shield-bug Through Laowa 25mm at x2.5 and f8

I spotted this individual hanging around on the flower and stems of a Gladiolus in today's sunshine. It was walking in and out of the flower and up and down on stems. I was standing where there was no support to steady me. So, together with no experience of this lens on a mobile insect, and a bit of hand shake, there were few keepers from this session. Ideally, I would have fetched my flash guns but I had no idea how long the bug would stay.

I would normally have selected f11 or f16, to get the width of the head all in focus but I was more interested in eye detail. These were all shot at the same magnification but one is cropped by about a third, the others uncropped.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5x-5x ultra-macro at f8, ISO 1600*.

*I would normally not venture beyond 800.
