Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread
Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread
Hoverfly Chrysotoxum bicinctum
These appear for a short time in early summer. They settle on vegetation but usually very briefly, making photographing them challenging. These are the best I could obtain in two long sessions.

Dance Fly or Dagger Fly Feeding
There is divided opinion as to whether these should be called Dance Flies or Dagger Flies. They are in the family Empididae, and this may be a species of Empis.
I was photographing hoverflies on Goldenrod leaves when I saw this a few leaves down in the foliage. These flies are predators and this one has caught a moth.
Getting a good angle was tricky, as I thought I might easily put it to flight but it turned out to be quite tolerant of my bending back of stems and leaves, out of the frame.
Olympus EM-1(aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/40 to 1/60 at f10, overcast sky, hand-held.
The stereos are crosseye, the second one of cropped images.

Large Skipper on Valerium Flowers
When I walked close by this feeding butterfly this afternoon I was surprised that it kept feeding. So I fetched my camera and got quite a few shots. All were at 1:1 (FOV 17.5mm) but they have been variously cropped.
Page 33 suggests it's a Rhyssa persuasoria - sabre wasp "the easiest to identify" I'm obviously not very good at this! though I was confused as there's not a nine inch nail sticking through the one I photographed!
