I spotted a green woodpecker on our lawn today doing a good job of aerating it. We see them there quite often, perhaps they should be renamed lawnpeckers. As it was quite close to the house I grabbed the camera and took some pictures through the kitchen window (1930s-vintage wobbly glass so I have to choose my pane with care). After a bit it flew up onto an oak which is a bit further away. I was able to get some more shots by quietly leaning out of the kitchen door so as not to alarm it.

All with the E-3 + EC-14 + 50-200 SWD. Lawn shots medium crops, tree ones quite heavy.

    I hope you enjoy them

    Cheers,

        John

I've been after getting good shots of these beautiful birds for ages without success.
I would not have known that some were through glass

        Well done.
        All the best

          Ooh, they're good!

We get green woodpeckers in our garden too, but never quite close enough to get a reasonable, let alone a decent, picture.

Ours eats ants, is that what yours hunts for in the grass?

            Re: Garden visitor

Thank you, all, for the kind words

I think it must be ants, Ellie. Once it finds an area of interest, the woodpecker keeps having a peck or two then lifting it's head and cocking it to one side in order to have a good look. I've never seen it pull anything large out of the ground so ants would fit the bill and we certainly have plenty of ants nests in the lawn, giving it a name far above it's station

Poor old ants must be pretty peeved

            Cheers,

            JohnGG
