No Red Arrows!!

Air display on Saturday the Red Arrows had top of the bill but did not show! (comms problems) Took a few shots all at long range as the main activity was at the opposite end of the bay from all other years. Sky was dull and overcast. All with OMD ME1 and either Olympus 50-200, Sigma 135-400 or Sigma 50-500 hand held. ISO of the scale

1 fast and loud!






2 The Slieve Donard Hotel in background an old railway hotel (trains long gone)






3 A bit of formation flying one going slow the other peddling as fast as he could!






4 Too fast a shutter on all prop planes; with the weather to get a slow shutter for blur meant blur all over.






5 The Dublin Coastguard boys came up and did a winching display with the local lifeboat.







have not posted for a while as I have got lazy and usually log on by phone or tablet, using desktop today will have to use it more.

Interesting and great seeing a Blenheim up there! Nice location for an air display too. Shame about the white sky, that's such a common issue. But it's nice seeing your shots.

What I'm inclined to do for aircraft shots is slow the shutter speed to about 1/250; it blurs the prop enough, but keeps the rest sharp.

I missed the Tibenham air show - it was last weekend - and every time it's on I manage to miss it. (Grrrr!) Hope to go to another airshow though shortly; I've given up on Duxford though, much too crowded - and expensive.

Thanks I was having to shoot with long lenses so anything below 1/500 resulted in so much shake the shots were unusable so just had to accept frozen blades.

No shows from the Red Arrows are fairly common - even if it's only the odd aircraft or two. Personally, I think they've lost their edge - probably as a result of accidents over recent years. The displays are pretty tame compared to incarnations 10 years or more ago. Now, La Patroille de France - that's something worth travelling for!

I've noticed the same thing. When we watched the Jersey air show a few years ago, we came away as the Red Arrows started; someone said to us, "aren't you going to watch them?" and I replied, "I've seen them perform for about 40 years now, and I've got a bit bored with them." I think they've probably run out of new ideas.

The telephoto lenses give a very interesting perspective for nos. 2 and 4.

Appearances are deceptive Mark.

The two aircraft were manufactured just five years apart and the original designs for the two both date from the late 1940's.

The biplane is a Pitts Special aerobatic aircraft and was built (a home build from a kit) in 1981. The jet is a restored BAC Strikemaster ex the Sultan of Oman's Air Force built in 1986 and is the last one ever built (from a kit of parts left over from the production run to replace an aircraft which crashed in service).

The Pitts was designed in 1944 and has always been largely built as a "home build " from kits. For many years it was the prime aircraft for the World Aerobatic Championships until it was replaced by the Russian YAK which from your earlier posts I understand you have some experience of. Kits are still being manufactured for home assembly to this day.

The Strikemaster (sold to Saudi Arabia, Oman and New Zealand among others) was an armed version of the Jet Provost RAF trainer which entered service in 1954 and was developed from the piston engined Provost which had entered service just four years earlier.

So, two aircraft which appear to be from different eras but are in fact contemporaries built just five years apart to designs which both originated nearly forty years earlier.

Sent some of my air display shots to local paper two have been used one a half page the other a quarter sheet. quality at that size was impressive as the originals sent were both crops.
