  • Cuba 98 - Three from the square.

We spent several lunch times "picnicking" in the same little tree shaded square. In the heat of the day a light snack was all that was required and it gave a chance to interact with the locals, share our supplies and snipe a few shots too!

Interesting series providing a 'window' into the life of Cuba.

You may be interested to have a look at the work of Christa Suter on Flickr, I think she's Cuban, but her photography based in Cuba is phenomenal - it will blow your socks off (it did for me, I'm sitting here sock-less).

        Good detective work.
Is the photography her own work, I assume it is. I only look at images and decide whether I like them or not, and if they do catch my eye I'll pause much longer on each image, and imagine how I could import the technique into my own work. As I'm a 'learner', I find I can take instruction from many of the images on Flickr. There are some impressive photographers posting on a regular basis.

It's a shame her pictures are in black and white as Cuba is such a colourful place. As they were taken in early December there was probably a lot less sun and rain too.

Like the guy eating his melon (?) ! Looks almost like he's licking his lips.

Just had a look at Christa Suter's gallery. A lot of her technique is very simple, isn't it? No clutter, just a very simple, straightforward composition; in other words, good art. Very obvious when you look at it, yet not easy to emulate.

You've got it Keith, nice and simple but not easy to emulate. Black and White suits the genre, colour is distracting. We see in colour all he time, it's refreshing to see in shapes and tones.

I always try and remember the adage, artists add to the canvass whereas photography is a subtractive art, less is more.

Whatever this lady does for a living she does a damn good photograph, I feel honoured that she's following me!!

It was a Papaya. A great big thing that I bought in the market and we sat and ate "at it". I had a penknife and cut the top off and then cut rings and trimmed the skin off a bit at a time, eating little cubes with our fingers. I saw the guy eyeing it up so I went over and offered him the top and bottom bits. He thanked me and no sooner got a spoon out of his pocket and started into it!
