  • Dahlia imperialis

This is a Tree Dahlia I came upon this week. You don't see many of them anymore, which is a shame. They can grow to 5m tall, but have brittle stems so need a protected spot in the garden.
I didn't crop this one as I liked the Eucalyptus trees in the background.

    And a closeup.

E-M5 with the 12-50 kit lens.

I can't recall ever seeing one of these Lyn, they must be quite rare. The pink blooms sit well against the eucalypts and blue sky.

As a child in our garden mum used to grow the common variety, big red, pink and yellow ones - being the precocious child I was, I would dig up the tubers and slice them as if they were sweet potatoes.

Hi Mark. They are only rare in the sense that they are considered an "old fashioned flower" and not grown very much anymore. Gardening can be "fashion conscious" too! . Your poor Mum - I get the feeling she had a cross to bear with you and your siblings!

They are unusual Keith and should be grown more. Thanks for looking.
