  • NZ back country

On Friday we took a long route from Wellington to Napier. This included a little-used road across the Kaweka Range, part of the backbone of mountains running most of the length of NZ.

I liked this rural scene enough to put it on my computer desktop; it's the Rangitikei River:

An old suspension bridge alongside the one-way road bridge across the Rangitikei river:

The autumn colours are conservative this year:

We came up to the eastern edge of the volcanic plateau, where tussock grassland is the norm:

Looking north from the quiet intersection:

From the shade of the signpost, looking west across the volcanic plateau to Mount Ruapehu (for this pic I adjusted the levels more than usual to show up the mountain):

The Kaweka Range, from a lay-by between road and drop:

We were about to leave the lay-by to drive down to the east coast, when this brightly painted van hurtled down the road and came to an abrupt stop in front of us. The 2 young women tourists wanted their photo taken with the van. One stood by it and the other popped up through the sun roof. I took photos on their camera and cell phone - the latter for them to send to friends back home. They weren't going to find any useful cell-phone coverage till they were nearer the coast! I snapped this pic through the (grubby) windscreen as both vehicles began to move. The rental van company is in a bit of trouble for some less friendly sayings on their vans, but this one is ok

Rosemary, what lovely set of images depicting an erstwhile unknown part of AUS (to me)

I bet you had a lovely time but no horses

We really enjoyed the drive, neither of us have been this way before. Saw some horses in the distance nearer the east coast, but more cows and sheep

Umm, I know the Aussies think NZ is one of their off-shore islands, but last night NZ beat Oz in the Rugby League ANZAC test

Nice set Rosemary. This is one of the many roads we did not travel on our recent trip. Not fond of Napier though as we met a trigger happy traffic cop (radar gun) while navigating into town. Been back two weeks having also visited NZ western island😉 and am still sorting my photos.

Of course, and it's not that bad a blooper! Aussies and Kiwis are squabbling all the time

Once you get "south of the Bombay Hills" ie out of Auckland, it gets very pretty! I'm glad you enjoyed your time in NZ

                  Looking forward to the photos
We often go to Napier, enjoy it very much, I'll have a few more pics when I've worked through them. We didn't encounter the nasty cop,

These shots give a lovely impression of the emptiness and remoteness of the NZ back country. They bring back happy memories of many hours sat in a camper van with the road atlas on my knees back in 1990.

                        Thanks John and Keith
The sheep seemed startled by our car going by . We enjoyed having the road to ourselves for many kilometers, and when outside taking photos it was quiet with barely a breeze. A great time!
