    Re: Oceanic whitetip shark

Taken with a wide angle lens, wow so close! The 5-axis IS would definitely have been working overtime if I'd been taking the shot
It's a cracker love to see some more.

Another cracker of a shot... all we need now, if you're up for it, is a Great White.
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

The was an attack last year (or maybe the year before).

That said, it was Russian divers who were feeding the sharks so frankly they got what they deserved. It was the same year an old lady was killed (although they think that might have been a Mako) which happened because a boat had thrown a load of dead sheep overboard (which is illegal) so the sharks got used to feeding at the surface.

I've dived the Red Sea many a time and never been lucky enough to see any Oceanics or Tigers.

If I were going back I would be seriously tempted to get a housing for my EM1 - I presume it's possible to fire strobes from the housing?

Fantastic shot Steve. I found the 7-14 to be excellent on the E-M1 and very useful in the tight streets of Havana!

In the Red Sea there was a Frenchwoman diver killed by a shark in 2009. In 2010 there were 5 deaths, including two Russians - all 5 were swimming/snorkelling. This year there was 1 fatality (German) who was swimming. Once you get down eye to eye with a shark they become more wary and often very timid; it can be difficult to get close to them. The oceanic whitetip however is not afraid to get in close to check divers out, but that is it, they are just curious and it is very rare they attack divers.

With swimmers/snorkellers though it is very different. The sharks are attracted by the noise and commotion of people splashing about on the surface and because they have the element of surprise they have no fear. The most dangerous situations are being on the surface, making noises and splashing, swimming early morning or late afternoon/evening (sharks are more active between dusk and early morning) or being in the water when there is food (bait) present.

Attacks on people are extremely rare but when the press release their, often heavily biased, news reports they hit the headlines (press go for sensationalism, it sells!). The fact is sharks kill less than a dozen people every year whilst we kill 100 million every year.

Strobes. I am using my old Ikelite DS-161 strobes, connected via fibre optics and converters. This only gives me manual control, no TTL. There would be other strobes options that I haven't looked in to that should offer TTL. The Nauticam housing (NA-EM1) is beautifully engineered, very small and light and gives full access to all controls. I will never buy an Ikelite again now that I've tried Nauticam.

The only Olympus housing I have used/owned was for an Olympus C-2020 many years ago. The quality was awful, started cracking after a year or so. A friend mentioned that the Olympus housing for the EM-1 wasn't up to the quality of the Nauticam, which is a professional housing. I can't really comment but my housing is an absolute dream to use and I can't see that the PT-EP11 would be as good. It all depends on your budget and preference but for me the Nauticam was the only option - sorry Olympus.

The Nauticam housings are blatantly the housings of choice - I just don't do enough diving nowadays to justify it.
