Enjoyed a great day out at the Essex Wildlife Trust Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre with Peter Birder and his wife, Sandra.
The morning started with wall to wall grey skies and no chance of seeing the promised solar eclipse, but as the day progressed the sun eventually vanquished the cloud to give us some glorious spring light, albeit with a hazy atmosphere in the distant views over the reserve.
I started with Peter's 25mm f1.8 attached to my EM-5, the first time I had used this impressive lens. I was surprised how close it can focus. I tried it wide open at f1.8 to isolate these lichens from the background in a wood pile purposely constructed to provide a habitat for insects, but shot at f4 because the DOF was too shallow.

Here's Peter trying a similar shot with his pancake zoom.

Switching to my 40-150mm (the kit version!) I soon discovered that the crisp, spring sunlight was somewhat compromised by the distant haze.
Peter got some lovely shots with his 75-300mm lens of various birds out on the water, albeit needing a heavy crop, but they were too distant for me. Instead I tried an "arty" contre jour shot which I converted to B&W in pp using Silver Efex.
