  • So this is the 12-40...

    EXPECTATIONS

Set to low(isn). I'd read some reviews, and this is not the M43 equivalent of the 14-35 f2 (an optical monster sans compromise). Rather, it is designed within the M43 philosophy, which allows for software correction (just as anti-compromise Leica has done, with its new CSC system).

    OUT AND ABOUT

Of course, its all part of God's plan that the weather is gloomy whenever I have a new bit of kit to test, so thank goodness for Dramatic Tone.

It's a long time since I last shot this wide (the old 9-18 hasn't had an outing in a while). Not to shabby at all. However, I was surprised by how good this lens is at 40mm.

My walk took me away from the canal basin, and into central Manchester:

I walked around the side of the Central Library, into St Peters Square, and the sun came out. For some of the photos I took here, 12mm proved hard. The camera's in built sprit level proved questionable, since the act of pressing the shutter is going to cause some movement.

But there's more to this lens than just the (very effective) wide end:

Re: So this is the 12-40...

I've only been shooting with the E-M1 + 12-40 for a couple of weeks but find it to be a nice lens capable of great results.
A bit bigger than I had hoped but it feels nice and balanced.
My walkaround lens on my Canon FF is 24-105 and 15-85 on my APS-C Canon so I find the 40mm end of the Oly 12-40 a bit restricting but I'm slowly getting used to it.

Nice set of images that show the quality of the lens

Thanks. The 24-105L is a great lens, and I would have loved to have seen an equivalent for Micro Four Thirds, but f4 would be restrictive (and a 12-52 f2 would, I think, be huge).
