  • Pitfour Lake

I've seen many images taken here so decided to take a look for myself.
Pitfour Estate lies in the Buchan area of Aberdeenshire so why its called Pitfour LAKE and not LOCH is beyond me.
We may have lost our independence but we're rapidly losing our identity as well

A lovely set Mike. I like the lighting in the first.
I hope you don't mind me saying but I wonder if the first two could benefit from a small horizon tweak (negative to the left).

      Re: Pitfour Lake

      Three very nice shots.

The first stands out for me for the great light.

A bit of research reveals that Pitfour is called a lake because like the other three lakes in Scotland (lake of the Hirsel, Pressmennen Lake and Lake Louise) it is man made. It was created around 1809 as part of the landscaping for Pitfour House a mansion built for the 3rd Laird and referred to by a former Professor of Scottish Architectural History as "the Blenheim of Northern Scotland". The lake was modelled on a similar one in Windsor Great Park. The house was demolished around 1926.

      Thanks for sharing.

I think you could be right but I think its an optical illusion as the camera and tripod's level indicators were spot on.
I'm usually paranoid about wonky horizons but in this case I think a wee tweak to make them "optically" horizontal would have worked better.
Thanks for bringing this to my notice - something to look out for in the future

          Thanks for the info Peter
TBH, I've never heard of these 3 Lakes.
The only true Lake in Scotland is Lake of Menteith in the Trossachs.
Another local(ish) Lake is Haddo Lake, part of the Haddo House Estate, an NTS property here in Aberdeenshire.

I agree Mike, it's an optical illusion/perspective problem.
I take a lot of photos around the reservoir (some 500 hectares) where the Wildlife Trust reserve I am involved with is located. As the resevoir is a flooded valley it has a very irregular shape and the shore line goes in all directions and when no actual horizon is visible sections of shoreline give the appearance of a horizon which confuses the brain (mine anyway)

            Regards.
