        Re: Papplewick Victorian Pumping Station

The pumping station director sent me the following information for anyone interested and planning a visit.

Thank you for your email and the link to the photos which are great. I had a quick look on the photography forum and some of the members were talking about the reservoir. We didn't have it open at the December event due to the bad weather - the bus has to go half a mile up the hill behind the Pumping Station along a track which is impassable in poor weather.

NEXT IN STEAM: April 5th & 6th, 11am-5pm plus a few more links.

Maybe it would make a good venue for a forum meet up?

          Re: Papplewick Victorian Pumping Station

I've been away from my desk a few days so I come to your extraordinary images late, Phill.

Looks incredibly like a set out of a Harry Potter movie.

Yes it did look a bit surreal, especially the giant spanners. All the more intriguing as it's our real industrial heritage.

Don't know why I missed this 4 weeks ago but I'm glad it's come round again. The Victorians certainly knew how to combine functionality with style!

Sorry to come to this post rather late. What a magnificent monument to steam, and so well documented. Thanks for sharing, and for the links.

I am seriously impressed with your industrial heritage Phill. Mind boggling ingenuity like many things British.

Afterthought: what happened to all the chalk from the cross channel tunnel - will it be used in classrooms across Britain for the next thousand years?

I think they use whiteboards and felt-tip pens these days, Mark. But it means that snooker/pool/billiards players will be able to chalk their cues for a VERY long time.

Cor thanks guys I hadn't realised so many had missed it first time round. It really was an excellent visit. The equipment is stunningly well maintained and the volunteers were really a very friendly and enthusiastic bunch. I'll definitely go back one day.

it's a great place to visit.....a cathedral for engineers! I used a different brand of camera when I visited some years ago with the Leica Fellowship and thoroughly enjoyed it.....they even fired up the boiler and ran the steam engine, a really memorable place.

Dave thanks. A cathedral for engineers - what a wonderful description. Very apt.
