  • 40-150mm1:2.8PRO+ MC-14 first outing!

Father Christmas said as I had been very, very good, I could have my pressie this year a week early, so today we ventured out for the first time with this lens/teleconverter combination and I have to say I was very impressed. I had been somewhat concerned about weight issues but I can honestly say I really didn't notice much difference over carrying the camera with the 75-300mm.

I was very pleased with initial results, although it will take a little time to feel totally confident.

We saw, and missed a photographic opportunity of, a couple of kingfishers but it was a question of third time lucky. Below are three from the day - one showing one proud bird holding on to a late lunch!

Just to show a different aspect of the lens, I took the following two pix - towpath landscapes - from exactly the same spot, one at 56mm, the other at 155mm.

All taken with the OM-D E-M1.

Nice results, Ann1e, I think you are going to get a lot of use out of that lens!

I'm still trying to decide if No 2 is a kingfisher trying to swallow a fish, or a fish trying to swallow a kingfisher! It's certainly a large mouthful for a small bird, particularly as it looks like a perch!

Nice shots Anne. You really must PM me with the stretch of canal you use, so I can show Dibnah.

Yes I agree - perch. I wonder how the bird copes with the spines on the dorsal fin and sharp edges on the gill covers?

Great set I like the shot with the fish.

I suppose by making sure to swallow it head-first and relying upon strong digestive juices. They must have stomach linings like iron!

And is not mentioning the perch it is on that bramble/wild rose has vicious looking thorns. This shots look good how much of a crop are they.?

Almost all the shots we have managed to take of canalside kingfishers have been from a viewpoint on the towpath on the other side of the canal, so the distances in every case are very similar. I am showing below the original size and without this lens, I do not think this degree of crop would have been as successful - although it is far from perfect, there is more detail than I have been getting, bearing in mind the bird is sitting in trees/hedging in light and shade.

                  6.

I'll PM Dibnah, Stephen, but if she brings you with her, you may well frighten our kingfisher friends away!
