  • French Market

This was something of an experiment. My wife went to Hythe (next village) this afternoon to do some shopping etc. I went along for the ride with the intention of taking a few shots from the promenade. Found that there was a "French Market" taking place so decided to try my hand at street photography. For the first time ever I used Auto mode and Liveview.

I was reasonably pleased with the results but surprised at the range of ISO values chosen, 200-1000.

    E-M1 + M.Z 40-150mm ED

I am not sure that the camera has picked the focus point that I would have hoped. It appears that the racks behind the seller are sharper than his face.

All views and suggestions welcome as always.

    Hi there Adagio!

Some great pictures here - did you have face-detect on for picture 3 where it missed focus slightly. I have to admit I tried my E-M1 in iAuto this morning for the first time (I'd been trying some landscapes and a kestrel flew over so I span the dial and hoped) and couldn't get it to focus where I wanted it to at all.

My favourite image is the busker - you can almost feel his foot tapping looking at the image.

    Cheers,

    Ralph.

I think you need a wider aperture.

          Re: French Market

Thank you all for your comments.

The experimental method was, in retrospect, pretty appalling. Too many variables iAuto, Liveview, no preparation etc. etc. . .

I mitigation this was not the shoot I had intended and I have only had the camera 2 weeks and it has rained most of that time. A good deal of manual reading had been done but I don't find Olympus manuals to be models of clarity. So it was a case of carpe diem.

I had wanted to use the camera at waist level primarily for the better viewpoint but had never used Liveview on my E-520 since the focusing was abysmal and I don't like holding cameras at arms' length. Yes Ralph face detect was on as I realised a couple of shots later when I noticed that when locked on a white rectangle appeared around the face. There were 2 other shots which suffered from a less than optimum focus point.

In the end I managed a few images that I was quite happy with. I learned a lot. There is, however, much more to learn about this great little camera.

Where available, David Busch guides are very good, but too bulky to carry around. Harold
