  • Desert Wheatear - a 'first' for me

I decided to go for a walk on Lowestoft North Denes this morning to see if there were any interesting birds about after yesterday's dreadful weather. I noticed a few people with scopes by the promenade and went over to investigate. It turned out that they were watching a male Desert Wheatear which was posing, obligingly on the sea wall. It is only the fourth one recorded in Suffolk and a first for me. Needless to say I took rather a lot of photographs, especially as the conditions were perfect. What a gorgeous little bird!

Many thanks for the kind comments. It was certainly a wonderful experience. Apparently the bird was still present today, despite heavy rain showers and a strong winds. Amazingly, another Desert Wheatear, this time a female, was found this afternoon at Gorleston, a few miles from this one. Considering that they are usually found in central Asia and North East Africa, there must have been some very unusual conditions involved. The sad thing is that it is almost certain that they will never reach their original destination.

I had a look at the other shots which I took and came across this one. As Desert Wheatears are insectivorous it looks as if there is plenty of food available for it.

                              Great shots Ron.

Wonderful to get a shot of a rareity like this.

We had one at Abberton in late October 2012 which I posted some shots of but you have done a much better job and had better light.
